Terry Schiavo
As one who has had the unfortunate responsibility to make end of life decisions for a loved one, I can hardly contain my anger at those politicians who stuck their noses into the Terry Schiavo situation.
That's not to say that the courts didn't have an important role to play. There were two issues:
Was Mrs. Schiavo in a persistent vegetative state and, if so, who could make decisions on her behalf. As to the first, multiple courts heard multiple experts testify to the effect that she was in a persistent vegetative state with virtually no chance of recovery. (Its almost beside the point that the autopsy showed that the experts were right.) As to the second, the courts determined that her husband, based on his understanding of her wishes, was authorized to make that agonizing end of life decision on her behalf. Its no surprise that her parents disagreed with that conclusion - people disagree with courts all the time - but once all appeals have been exhausted, that's supposed to be the end of it. Shame on them for trying to do an end run around the courts and shame on the politicians, primarily right-wing Republicans, for pandering to whoever the hell they were pandering to.
I'm sure Michael Schiavo consulted his conscience. I hope he prayed. But ultimately, it was his decision. If, in the eyes of God, he made the wrong one, he will be held to account.
