College Basketball and Dickie V.
I'm a big fan of college basketball. From the early season inter-conference games and holiday tournaments, to the always interesting conference games and championship tournaments to the best of all American post season playoffs - the NCAA Championship. What a great diversion during dreary winter months.
I'm not a big fan of Dick Vitale, aka Dickie V., ESPN's color analyst of choice. From the way he seems to try to jump out of the TV screen into my living room whenever he's on camera, to his incessant name dropping, to his inane catch phrases, I find him extremely annoying. Unfortunately, his twice a week reporting assignments usually include the week's most interesting games.
Last night's big game was part of the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and involved Duke and Indiana. Duke was undefeated and ranked #1 in early season polls, but had not been as dominating as some had expected. Indiana was undefeated and ranked #14, and was playing at home before an enthusiastic crowd.
Good ole' Dickie V. managed to get some TV face time to berate the administration of Indiana University for not naming the basketball venue after former head coach, Bobby Knight. This was not a mere suggestion, it was a demand. How could they not do it? According to Dickie, Knight was Indiana Basketball. After all, he had brought conference championships and an NCAA title to the University.
What Dickie failed to note, was that Knight also brought great embarrassment to the school. Whether it was the famous chair-throwing incident, the choking of one of his players, the fight with a professor in a downtown Bloomington restaurant, or any number of other blow-ups, the University finally had enough, and fired him. Knight sued the school and lost. To suggest that he be "honored" by the school is beyond ridiculous.
I'll continue to watch college basketball, so I guess I'll continue to listen to Dickie V. Maybe if I turn the sound down real low..........
