Happy Anniversary

Thirty-eight years ago today, I should have died. I survived the small arms fire that shot out the controls on my UH-1. I survived the subsequent crash that brought the helicopter down, inverted. I walked away before the ship, fully loaded with fuel and ammunition, exploded, and was rescued before the VC and/or the NVA closed in on the crash site.
That's a lot of surviving!
Some might be tempted to see the hand of God at work. To me, that view cheapens the sacrifice of those who did not survive. And, if I lived because I was supposed to be part of some larger plan, I suspect He's been disappointed in me. I think it was more the case that, "sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you."
Nevertheless, these years have been a bonus. When my time finally does come, I'll have no complaints.
